David Lindley & Wally Ingram
Twango Bango III
Star session player David Lindley, originally with the Los Angeles ethno-psychedelic band Kaleidoscope, put his signature slide-guitar edge on a bunch of Jackson Browne records, along with many other fine Southern California discs in the 1970s and 1980s. In the past decade, he’s become better known for the stunning world-music albums he and Henry Kaiser cut with musicians in Madagascar and Norway. This set, recorded with drummer Wally Ingram, is along the lines of his “El Rayo-X” discs: Oddball Lowell George-style blues and rock with twisted lyrics about evil corporate scientists and guys getting fat from junk food, plus forays into Cajun music (Nathan Abshire’s “Gabrielle”), trad folk (“Hesitation Blues,” “Little Sadie” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”), and plenty of California-style greenbud reggae. The playing is superb; some of the instrumental passages will raise the hairs on your neck.
