Darfur Now
To focus world attention on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan (which the Sudanese government claims is not a genocide being perpetrated by Arab militias against the indigenous population), director Ted Braun documents the efforts of six individuals: Darfur volunteer relief worker Ahmed Mohammed Abakar, victim-turned-rebel soldier Hejewa Adam, International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, UN representative Pablo Recalde, California activist Adam Sterling, and actor Don Cheadle. Braun is, in a sense, preaching to the choir—if you don’t already know what’s going on in Darfur, you won’t get much background from the film. But you will get a feeling for how responses are arising at many different levels, a sense of cautious, tentative hope amidst all the horror, and a call to action.
