Dancin’: It’s On

A Beverly Hills teen (Witney Carson) spends a summer at her father's Florida hotel, where her dance moves catch the eyes of two employees—both good dancers, but one hot and hunky (Chehon Wespi-Tschopp), the other dull and dweeby (Matt Marr). The script by David A. Prior and director David Winters limply recycles bits of Dirty Dancing, Flashdance and other supposed classics of the 1980s. Dance setups are contrived, but the dances themselves are infectious fun—not surprising, since many in the cast are alumni of So You Think You Can Dance (U.S. and Canada versions). Otherwise, the movie is flat-footed and cheap. The inexperienced stars are self-conscious and amateurish, yet oddly endearing—maybe because Winters and Prior's clunky lines present obstacles Meryl Streep and Colin Firth never had to face. J.L.
