Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Quite possibly the best martial arts film ever made, a mantle it has earned in my mind. Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are magical in Ang Lee’s beautiful and poetic take on the genre. The film achieves a level of special effects stunt work that will be hard to surpass in the future. Without the help of computers, Lee does things old school, sending his actors up walls and flying into treetops for battle sequences using wires and camera tricks. The results are jaw-dropping amazing, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The film is deserving of the hype surrounding it and provides some of the best visual treats of the 2000 movie year. Remarkable.
