Cave paintings are basically really old comic books. Think about it: They have images in sequential order, they display creatures chasing other creatures and there’s often a climax, also known as “the kill.” OK, so art historians would definitely go insane with that comparison, but it’s the one used by filmmaker Chris Brandt. His documentary Independents: A Guide for the Creative Spirit features 24 comic creators who discuss their creativity through what was once considered lowbrow art—comic books. Brandt will make an appearance for the Movies on a Big Screen show, along with local artist Skinner, who will show his short animated film Hell Dream, and local independent comics, including Ben Schwartz, Paul Allen, Anthony Leano, Stephen R. Buell and Mike Hampton.
Independents: A Guide for the Creative Spirit will show Sunday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m.; $5; at Guild Theater, 2828 35th Street; www.moviesonabigscreen.com.
