When an architect (Adam Sandler) goes shopping for a universal remote, a mysterious store clerk (Christopher Walken) sells him literally that: a remote that controls his universe, enabling him to pause, fast-forward, rewind and mute his life. That’s the concept behind Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe’s script, and that seems to be as far as anyone took the idea. But if you’ve got Sandler, why knock yourself out? His fans probably won’t care if the script is any good or not. Between halfwit gags, Sandler continues his dogged (and probably futile) drive to be taken seriously as an actor, but as an architect, he’s about as convincing as he was as a gourmet chef in Spanglish; Rick Baker’s old-age makeup easily upstages him. Director Frank Coraci has a simple style: Sandler, front and center, at all times.
