Clarence Darrow and cake
One of the most famous—or infamous—attorneys in U.S. history will get a stage reincarnation this week, when the one-man show The Trials of Clarence Darrow opens at the Thistle-Dew Dessert Theatre. Paul Hauck will reprise his role as the thinking-man’s favorite lawyer, most often remembered from the famous Scopes “Monkey Trial,” in which a Tennessee high-school teacher was convicted of violating state law by teaching the theory of evolution in science class. But Darrow also fought the death penalty vigorously, even in the famous case of the Leopold and Loeb “superman” murder, and was a major influence on the American Civil Liberties Union. The Trials of Clarence Darrow opens October 31 and runs through November 22; Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees on November 1, 15, and 22. $25 includes dessert, coffee and tea. Reservations required.
