Celebrating the cherry blossoms
When the cherry trees bloom in Japan, it’s a big, beautiful deal. The phenomenon is called hanami, or the cherry blossom festival, and people gather to admire the blooms, share food and drink and music to welcome spring. The Sudwerk Dock Store (2001 Second Street in Davis) brings the tradition here with the Davis Cherry Blossom Festival. The all-ages, free vegan-friendly event on Saturday, April 7, 12-10 p.m. and Sunday, April 8, 12-8 p.m. features Sudwerk brews (all vegan), obviously, including its new “floral and fruity” Cherry Blossom Sakura beer. Several food trucks will serve vegan options, including Chickpeas (falafel, shawarma, side salads; $8-$12); Street Cravings (nopales and tofu tacos; butternut squash, corn, zucchini and Brussels sprouts tacos); Koizora (inari, kappa maki cucumber rolls; $6); and Smokers Wild (apple cider slaw tacos; $12). Musicians Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan, Cal Raijin Taiko and Ross Hammond will play and Sudwerk is taking donations for Puerto Rico hurricane relief during the event.
