Cedar Rapids
After his idol’s accidental autoerotic suicide, a sheltered small-town insurance man (Ed Helms) gets a chance to rep his company at a big-deal annual conference. That means he’ll need to learn how to handle an unwanted hotel roommate (Isiah Whitlock Jr.), a foulmouthed and fun-loving competitor (John C. Reilly), and a plucky lust interest (Anne Heche), not to mention an attachment to his grade-school teacher (Sigourney Weaver), with whom he’s been having a not-OK affair. Director Miguel Arteta’s fun but forgettable comedy is exactly what its trailer advertises: an affectionate mockery of wholesome Midwesternism, with a cast full of funny, approachable-seeming stars. Screenwriter Phil Johnston’s droopy, throwaway plot does the job as a license for Helms to strut his stunted-man-boy and beleaguered-geek stuff, and especially for Reilly’s ever-amusing (and probably improvised) antics. But given a vibe so relaxed that it might as well be happening in your living room anyway, there’s no good reason not to just wait for the DVD. J.K.
