Capital Jazz Project reveals a huge surprise with Kalon. Pianist Joe Gilman is brilliantly captured. Supported by guest alto saxophonist Jim Snidero and guitarist Henry Robinett, the muscular tenor sax of Mike McMullen is impressively innovative, and drummer Rick Lotter and bassist Kerry Kashiwagi display their myriad influences. "Mordecai Speaks" is intense and focused, a hybrid of straight-ahead jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms. On "Parapherna," you can hear the group’s intensity, aggressive articulation and sensitivity. "Kalon" tenderly counter-balances a beauty that’s more than skin deep. Cole Porter’s "Dream Dancing" and Duke Ellington’s "In a Sentimental Mood," are classics freshly interpreted. CJP has developed a perceptive knowledge of the contemporary musical scene informed by tradition.
