If there is anything subtle or understated in the paintings of Richard Duning, I’m sure it’s unintentional. These works—some on canvas, some on paper—are large, direct, thick and strong. It would be really hard to walk past them without noticing. Even the paint is exceptionally thick and the brushstrokes wide and blatant. This raw outcome is a direct result of Duning’s approach. “What I am interested in is the art process,” he says, “the search for balance, healing and harmony. I’m interested in struggle, questions, tensions and passion.” And while the physical paintings don’t rely on representational imagery to promote Duning’s cause, the outcome is clear and forceful. The work of Richard Duning is on display at the Solomon Dubnick Gallery, 2131 Northrop Ave. The show runs through March.
