Azul Mexican Food and Tequila Bar
Most people slip into this foodie gem—which is usually overshadowed by its neighbor, that pun-friendly beer hall—for the succulent Mexican grub. But don't discount the bizarro wall art: A portrait of famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo hangs prominently on the wall (natch), but it's two other pieces that add spicy atmosphere to Azul's sleek interior. There's the somewhat alien face that's melting down a vertical canvas in Technicolor. Even better is the year-round New Year's Eve painting: A group of 20-something Latino friends bunch in as if for a photo, oblivious to the metaphysical threats hidden in plain sight—freakish demon babies and flames nipping at the edges. A perfect distillation of the joy and danger in every bite. 1050 20th Street, (916) 447-4040,
