Beach, The

A stoner-backpacker-philosopher’s dream—a commune on a secret beach populated by half-naked Europeans and enough pot to last forever. Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) persuades beautiful Francoise (Virginie Ledoyen) and her boyfriend to follow a psycho’s map and swim to “The Beach” there they find the pot and the hippies, and Frenchy falls for Leonardo (duh!). The film is filled with incredible jungle, beach and underwater cinematography, but the characters never develop, and DiCaprio’s portrayal ends up soft.
