Rolling hills, crooked oak trees and massive boulders. Alice Shaw photographed natural landscapes in Northern and Southern California and Nevada and gilded parts of these lilies with actual gold. Like religious paintings of the Middle Ages that contained gold leaf to display the images' holiness, Shaw selects a hillside or redwood trunk or lake to be gold on her black-and-white photograph, showing that these vistas, this earth is sacred to all of us.
