Attention, paella shoppers
Paul Somerhausen organizes the Sacramento Epicureans dining group. He grew up in Spain and likes to make paella for special events. I asked where he shops for authentic paella ingredients:
“Corti Brothers has a great selection of rice, including the one I prefer: Bomba [Rice]. It expands in width and it absorbs up to three times its weight in fluids. They also have a great selection of chorizos and sell good saffron.
“SF [Shun Fat] Supermarket on Stockton Boulevard or Sunh Fish market on Broadway are my two favorite seafood destinations for … fresh shrimp, calamari, clams, mussels and crab.
“If I need good vegetables or I’m lazy and I don’t want to make my own flan for dessert, I always love stopping by La Superior [Market]. They offer a great meat counter, lots of ethnic specialty items and the cheapest vegetables in town. They also sport a hot-food counter that is very good and a dessert and pastry section that will make anyone drool.”
