At your mother’s knee
For Mother’s Day, I asked Ginger Hahn of Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates—which, for the holiday, is offering a Meyer lemon ganache tart with lemon curd and strawberries—about her memories of her mom in the kitchen:
“I remember lots of strawberry shortcakes, jams, muffins and cookies. My favorite part of cooking was picking fruit from our backyard and my mom showing me how to make the best cobbler in the world. My grandmother … was a big canner. We would can cherries, peaches and blackberries.
“When I was 11, I woke up at 4 a.m. on Mother’s Day to make breakfast. I whipped up a batch of cinnamon rolls as quietly as I could and waited patiently for them to rise … and waited. I realized that I left out the yeast. I quickly hid them and made a batch of French breakfast muffins, eggs and sausage. I was so ashamed of my mistake that I didn’t tell my mom until after our breakfast. I almost started to cry … but my mom was so happy I tried.”
