Arranged for charm
Told from a young Indian woman’s point of view, Arranged Marriage is a passage to India as well as a journey into the custom of arranged marriages, the beauty and mystique of a Hindi wedding, the blush of first love and the start of a new life in a mysterious land called California. This new production of the Sacramento Theatre Company’s 2004 intimate debut of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s short story has been expanded to include Indian poetry and a larger dance troupe from STC’s Young Professionals Conservatory, which adds to the interpretation of unfolding events. Lead actress Roshni Shukla, who was a dancer in the original production, is exquisite in both her joys and sorrows, and the show is given necessary levity by the sly humor of Katherine Cristina Miller. The show feels short (a little more than an hour), but the presentation is wonderful.
