You’ll have to keep your wits about you at the Animal Planet Expo. There are some very cool things going on— like a chance to meet Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald from the Animal Planet series Emergency Vets; informative workshops on pet safety; dog-agility demonstrations; and an opportunity to come face to face with crocodiles, snakes and other outreach animals. Of course, because this is a corporate-sponsored event honoring a television channel, there are bound to be some heavy commercial pitches happening, as well. Witness (or maybe avoid) the Discovery HD Theater that “takes expo participants on a journey through the ‘Future of Television.’”

For animal lovers, the expo is a chance to spend a day in the park with your pet, meet some exotic creatures and learn about animal care. There are kids’ activities, an exhibit on animal-rescue techniques by the American Humane Society and animal-trivia contests. Just make sure to wear your critical-thinking cap, so you can filter the fun from the sales pitch.

The Animal Planet Expo happens from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It will be held at Crocker Park, located at 211 O Street. Admission is free. All pets must be kept on a leash. Visit www.animalplanetrescue.com for more information.
