Angular banjos sound good to you?
Those in a banjo frame of mind this Sunday, February 23, might want to stop by the Carmichael Elks Lodge, where the Southtown Strutters, Charlie Tagawa, Dave Marty, Jack Convery and six other banjo bands will be holding court from 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lodge is located at 5631 Cypress Avenue, and $12 will get you in. If you’re never in a banjo frame of mind, use that $12 to go see Cat Power at 9 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, at Harlow’s, 2706 J Street. Cat Power, formerly known as Chan Marshall, is a singer-songwriter of some renown whose new album, You Are Free, was released by Matador Records on Tuesday. On her last disc, 2000’s The Covers Record, she cut new versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Moby Grape, Michael Hurley, Nina Simone and the Rolling Stones.
