Sam Mendes’ cinematic foray into suburban anomie and family dysfunction is rarely as profound as it intends to be, but it has quite a story to tell, and there is much in its favor—a host of quirky characterizations, a scathing sense of humor, some extraordinary imagemaking, and a corrosively comical performance by Kevin Spacey.
