With her low, throaty voice and a simple, acoustic guitar, Auburn singer-songwriter Alyssa Cox crafts folky songs—like classic Greenwich Village-styled ballads, plaintive and sincere but made modern with a prickly, droll edge. It’s a style that’s equal parts Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jonathan Richman and Ani DiFranco—political, sensual, quirky even. The Colfax High School graduate is currently working on a debut album; for now, catch her live on songs such as the desolate and mournful “The Old Cemetery,” the earnest, wide-eyed “Low Moon,” or the biting “Punk Rocker Song.” 2030 P Street, www.myspace.com/alyssajcox.
