All hail the rooster sauce
March 28, Sriracha
It may sound like hyperbole to say that say Sriracha is not so much a sauce as a way of life, but I once saw a framed illustration of a Sriracha bottle with a caption that said “Sriracha is like my family” for purchase. If one is so inclined, a sexy Sriracha bottle costume can be ordered online for about $20 and Sriracha high heels and flats were once a real thing (they appear to have sold out online). During the great Sriracha shortage scare of 2013, someone tried to sell a single packet for $10,000 on eBay. No one bought it, but still.
Sacramento takes a turn celebrating this iconic hot sauce with a showing of Sriracha: A Documentary Film by Griffin Hammond. Dedicated to the origin story of the Sriracha phenomenon and its creator, David Tran, the 33-minute documentary was funded by a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $21,000 (the initial goal was to raise $5,000). It was recently declared “Best Short Film” at both the NYC Food Film Fest and the Chicago Film Fest.
Attendees of the showing will be treated to brunch by chef Matt Brown of Forrester Food as well as bloody marys featuring Preservation & Co.'s award-winning mix. For those who are so deeply in love with Sriracha that the aforementioned perks are simply not enough, VIP tickets come with early admission and a bottle of Preservation & Co.'s bloody-mary mix made on-site by owner Jason Pool. 11 a.m., Saturday, March 28; $25-$35. Preservation & Co., 1717 19th Street; http://foodliteracycenter.org.
