A village, green
Sometimes it takes a village. UC Davis’ West Village is the largest planned zero net-energy community in the nation. The first phase of the community, which will put back as much energy as it consumes from the electrical grid, opens this fall. The 200-acre project will eventually house student apartments, recreation amenities, retail space, the Sacramento City College Davis Center, and 343 single-family homes for university faculty and staff. Every apartment will be built with energy-conserving components and fitted with solar systems. The joint venture between UC Davis and the West Village Community Partnership broke ground in August 2009.
