A Jihad for Love
Filmmaker Parvez Sharma teamed up with producer Sandi DuBowski (Trembling Before G-d, about GLBT Orthodox Jews) to make A Jihad for Love, a documentary about gay men and lesbians trying to live as Muslims, often in repressive conditions. Among the subjects is a young man who was arrested and beaten in Egypt for being gay and found refugee status in France, and several young men from Iran who are on the run after their participation in a commitment ceremony was brought to the attention of the religious government. This work is particularly noteworthy because it includes the experiences of a number of lesbians. If you think there are no GLBTQ Muslims, think again.
