The 22nd annual Sammies award show is now one for the history books. With nearly 1,000 people in attendance and three-dozen awards bestowed, the event¡ªorganized and hosted by local music promoter Jerry Perry¡ªfeatured a diversity of acts and presenters on two stages at Ace of Spades in Midtown.

Early in the night, a line wrapped around the R Street corridor. Inside, the show didn’t disappoint. Highlights included a tribute to the late Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who died in April, from his longtime friend Jonah Matranga. Matranga was accompanied by Cheng’s teenage son, Gabe. The young Cheng, who plays bass in the Sammie-nominated band A Mile to Dawn, spoke eloquently of his father as a “sweet” man and real “gentleman.”

Other noteworthy moments included a dynamic performance by Paper Pistols (who won the Sammie in the Electronic category), as well as a set from the charismatic Young Aundee (nominated in three categories, including Release of the Year and Artist of the Year).

Then, there was the heart-pumping set by Kill the Precedent. Dressed in scrubs and toting creepy baby dolls, the band charged the stage with such intensity and rocked out with such force (one onlooker described them as a “metal Beastie Boys”), that it was no wonder the hardcore band took home the prize for Live Performer.

Read on for a full rundown on the night’s other trophy takers.
