19 TUES, Obits
Blue Lamp, 9 p.m., $8
Obits’ lead singer and guitarist Rick Froberg and Rocket From the Crypt’s Jon Reis, after playing in a band called Pitchfork for almost five years, started San Diego band Drive Like Jehu. It was a sick, explosive group, and the 1994 release of Yank Crime was their ferocious nine-track piece of perfection: gloriously long and angry short songs, wandering post-emo guitar, Froberg’s thrilling squeals. Some 15 years later, Obits sound is rockier, bluesier, more traditional, but there’s still that carnal guitar-rock vigor. Can’t wait to see it live. Seattle’s the Lights and Sacramento’s Bright Light Fever open. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.myspace.com/obitsband.
