With the new non-congregate housing site set to open soon at the location of the old BMX race track, Chico has some long-overdue movement toward providing shelter to those who need it locally. There are also significant concerns. Will 177 tiny-home shelters be enough? Is it too many units clustered in one area? Is the Jesus Center the right organization to run the site?

In “Shelter in the spotlight,” the feature story in the March print edition of the CN&R, Ken Smith talks to city staff, homeless advocates and service providers, including Jesus Center Executive Director Amber Abney-Bass, to get a sense of what to expect when the new site opens and what issues are on everyone’s minds.
