Issue: June 01, 2017
Morning, readers,
We've got a doozy of a paper in store for you this week, so get your coffee in hand and settle in for a while. Our feature story is about how law enforcement and mental illness work (or don't) together. In light of the high-profile shooting death of Desmond Phillips, whose family and supporters continue to speak out, we launched our own investigation into police killings of civilians. Staff Writer Ken Smith analyzed the last 20 years of such incidents and talked with law enforcement leaders, mental health professionals and families of victims to paint a full picture of what's happening and what's at stake.
In other news this week: The Bidwell Park and Playground Commission considers a plan to arm some—but not all—of the city's park rangers; Butte County's Drug Court celebrates the commencement of several participants who have successfully turned their lives around following drug-related convictions; University Bar reopens today as University Sports Bar; and much more.
