Issue: May 04, 2017
Morning, readers!
This week's feature story is on the more serious side, about a young Army soldier from Yuba City whose body was found near her base in Tennessee. She'd called out for help, accusing her ex-husband, also a soldier on base, of raping her and causing her to fear for her life. He's now behind bars, pending trial, along with an accomplice accused in her killing. On a broader level, the story of Shadow McClaine highlights some of the systemic problems within the U.S. military when it comes to female soldiers and sexual harassment and assault.
In other news: Chico city employees take the council to task on the proposed 2017-18 budget that does not include enough funding for road improvements; the race for governor in 2018 is already gearing up; and a Chico State student accuses her statistics professor of racial harassment.
Until next week, read on!
