Issue: August 28, 2014
Good morning!
I hope this email finds everyone in a happy mood. But if not (and even
so), check out this week's feature story on happiness and the science
behind it. Believe it or not, there are some fairly simple ways to
improve your mental state, and we share them with you. (Because we
really want you to be happy!)
In other news: Everyone is abuzz about the recent police shooting of an
unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Mo., and we are right there with them. Our
lead news story this week, written by staff writer Ken Smith, explores
the militarization of local law enforcement in light of new stats about
the transfer of military surplus guns, vehicles and other equipment to
Chico Police Department and the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Also read
our editorial about the Ferguson incident and how it relates to us here
in Butte County. For something a little lighter, regular contributor
Claire Hutkins-Seda writes about her experience at a recent tomato fest;
I spent a few hours soaking up (and drinking in) the ambiance and oils
at a local olive farm; and contributor Rachel Bush gives us a good
preview of this weekend's Butcher Shop theater extravaganza.
Have a great weekend! And, read on!
