EPA releases data on worst greenhouse-gas producers
The Environmental Protection Agency has reported that power plants are the leading source of greenhouse-gas emissions in the nation.
In the first documentation of global-warming pollution by facility, the survey included more than 6,700 of the largest sources of greenhouse gas, according to the SF Gate. Power plants accounted for 72 percent of the greenhouse gases reported to the EPA, with 20 mostly coal-fired plants from 15 states accounting for the top polluters. The largest single source of greenhouse gas in the country is Southern Co.'s Scherer coal power plant in Juliette, Ga. The second and third worst polluters are Southern Co.'s Bowen plant in Cartersville, Ga., and the James H. Miller Jr. power plant in Quinton, Ala.
Top EPA air official Gina McCarthy said the data is a “major milestoneÓ and said it would help them identify ways to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
