Where’s that education?

In my discussions with those who obtain the bulk of their knowledge of world events from Fox News, I am always amazed when they tell me that they are “educated” individuals (many with college degrees). Inasmuch, I am curious about just what part of their “education” they are using.

They obviously didn’t learn much history or they would know that the Crusades, Spanish Inquisition and, yes, Nazi Germany’s Holocaust (where in 1939 95 percent of the population claimed to be either Protestant or Catholic) were carried out by Christians (not Muslims) who instigated these horrendous atrocities.

If they had passed economics they would understand that a GDP growth of 2.3 percent (2014) is much better than a decline of 0.3 percent (2008).

If they learned statistics they’d understand that a decline of the unemployment rate from 9.9 percent (2009) to 5.6 percent (2014) is a positive change.

In taking science they’d know that it was not the clergy, but scientists who developed vaccines against smallpox and polio; invented the microchip; and took us to the moon, and that scientific experimentation and observation is the sole method for increasing human knowledge.

Their physics classes would have taught them that melting ice turns to water. Unprecedented increases in melting of the world’s glaciers and ice shelves due to global warming should give them concern, especially if their grandchildren plan to live in Florida or on Manhattan Island.

Their basic chemistry experiments would have revealed that burning anything, especially fossil fuels, depletes oxygen and increases carbon dioxide. We do not thrive in atmospheres without oxygen.

Their lack of a passing grade in anthropology suggests their belief that if you look like a Middle Easterner, you obviously are a member of ISIS. A lot of us look like Timothy McVeigh, Ted Bundy or David Koresh.

If they’d stayed awake during their biology courses they’d know that the foundation of evolution is “survival of the fittest.” Their insistence on owning AK47s and Glocks (made specifically to kill other humans) is proof of their strong support of this biological fact.

If they’d taken astrophysics they’d understand that the universe does not revolve around the Earth.
