What’s the greatest global threat?
Answers vary depending on what’s happening at home
What people consider the greatest threat to humanity varies by geographic area, according to the 2014 Global Attitudes Survey. In the war-torn Middle East, respondents identified religious and ethnic hatred as the top threat. In the advanced economies of Europe and the United States, residents said inequality was the biggest problem. In Asia, where overpopulation is straining natural resources, pollution and the environment was the greatest concern. Not surprisingly, Africans ranked AIDS and other diseases as their No. 1 fear. Residents in Latin America were more divided, but nuclear weapons, pollution and the environment were high on their list.
