Watch out for ticks!
Lyme-disease carriers spotted locally
Butte County residents are being cautioned about the presence of Western black-legged ticks, which can carry the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
According to the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District, the insects, which are commonly referred to as “deer ticks,” have recently been spotted on trails at Bidwell Park and the Lake Oroville Recreation Area.
The blood-sucking creatures often are found in cool, moist environments, including vegetated shaded areas. Lyme disease can be cured with antibiotics if detected early. When left untreated, the disease can cause arthritis or nervous-system damage.
BCMVCD recommends avoiding brushy and grassy areas, wearing long pants and long sleeves, wearing light colors so ticks can be spotted, and using insect repellent. For more info, visit www.bcmvcd.com.
