Safety tips for working out during cold winter months

Early sunsets and plunging temperatures can turn even the casual after-dinner walk or bike ride into a battle against the elements. Here are some tips for staying safe while exercising in the cold:
• Layer up: Exercise generates body heat. Wear easy-to-shed, easy-to-carry layers.
• Cover extremities: Wear gloves and thick socks, and protect your ears to avoid discomfort or frostbite.
• Watch the weather: Be prepared for weather changes, making special note of wind-chill factors.
• Get equipped: Wear reflective clothing in the dark, invest in chemical heat packs for hands and feet, and make sure your footwear has adequate traction for wet or icy conditions.
