Vampires Suck

Rated 2.0

The writing/directing team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer is responsible for such bottom-feeding fare as Date Movie and Epic Movie—spoofs notorious for consistently abusing whatever is hot at the multiplex to serve up 90 minutes of pop-culture references without adding anything, you know, funny to the mix. That said, they’ve gotten even lazier with their send-up of the Twilight series by keeping it down to one target, mashing up just the first two entries and adding snark. That said, Vampires Suck is probably the best of their attempts. It’s not very good (and sadly, a missed opportunity for a more skilled satirist) but does offer up more laughs than you typically find in a Judd Apatow movie. They’re not clever laughs (mostly on the level of an old Mad magazine spoof), but they’re laughs. And Friedberg/Seltzer mimic the look of the films fairly well, as the two leads offer up nicely turned caricatures of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s constipated acting styles.
