Turtles on the move
Scientists bring awareness to sea creatures’ plight
A conservation group is bringing attention to the plight of sea turtles by organizing an event tracking the creatures during their migration.
Caribbean Conservation Corp. kicked off its second annual Tour de Turtles last week. Using satellite-tracking technology, the tour follows 11 sea turtles as they head from nesting beaches to feeding grounds more than 1,600 miles away.
The goal is to learn more about the mysterious marine animals and the best ways to ensure their protection. In addition to watching the marathon, the public can sponsor the turtles through online adoptions.
The “race” is expected to last several months. Each turtle is fitted with a transmitter that tracks its distance. The results will be monitored on a regularly updated leader board. To cheer on the competitors, visit www.tourdeturtles.org.
