Tubers take to the Sac
Turnout highest on Sunday, lowest on Labor Day
Saturday was mellow, Sunday was a circus, and Monday was nearly dead, as tubers enjoyed the Labor Day weekend on their annual boozy float down the Sacramento River. Some 3,000 people participated on Saturday, as many as 10,000 on Sunday, and only a few hundred on a windy Labor Day.
Despite the large turnout Sunday, law-enforcement officials reported no serious incidents on the river, but they did make some 77 arrests over the weekend in Chico, most alcohol-related. With students newly returned to town and school just begun, the Labor Day weekend is traditionally a big party time, and this year was no exception.
