Tile City shuts down
Reasons for closure of stores unclear
Both the Chico and Redding Tile City stores went out of business on Oct. 22, though the reason is unclear.
Administration from the Chico store on Morrow Lane did not return calls or emails from the CN&R, and the Chico Chamber of Commerce and the city manager’s office had no knowledge of the closure. The store sold ceramic, stone and porcelain tile and countertops, and featured an extensive showroom.
Michael Mulcahy, a local building contractor who had an account with Tile City since 1995, said the store was “an incredible local resource,” and described the closure as a major loss to Chico’s building industry. “We’re just starting to pull out of the [economic] downturn, there’s a little bit more building activity, and now we have basically no local suppliers left for the building trades,” he said.
Calling Tile City’s old phone number yields a voice message that says, “We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years.”
