Tigers take down Ducks
Auburn clinches the championship in last seconds of game
The University of Oregon football team’s road to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) came to a disappointing end Monday evening (Jan. 10) during a nail-biting game in which the Ducks fell to the No. 1-ranked Auburn University Tigers.
In the fourth quarter, Paradise native Jeff Maehl caught a pass for a two-point conversion. That tied the teams at 19 points apiece with just two minutes and 33 seconds left on the clock. Cam Newton, Auburn’s quarterback and the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner, answered with a 73-yard drive.
The Tigers clinched the national championship during the last seconds of the game with a 19-yard field goal. It was the team’s first national championship since 1957.
