The Goods

Commencement, all around
Almost 1,000 Butte College students will be celebrating this weekend with associate in arts and sciences degrees. The graduation ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 23) at the John Cowan Sports Complex on the main campus.

The student keynote speaker will be Ana Assis, from Rio de Janeiro, who attended Butte College through the international recruitment program and plans to transfer to Chico State.

There are also a few specialized graduations:

Licensed Vocational Nurse graduation: Friday (May 23) at 1 p.m. in the Campus Center.

Butte College 49th Firefighter I Academy graduation: May 29 at 6 p.m. at the Paradise Performing Arts Center.

Butte College 121st Law Enforcement Academy graduation: June 12 at 6 p.m. at the Paradise Performing Arts Center.

Ready for anything
Those still on campus Wednesday (May 28) are in for a special treat—that is, if they’re prepared for it. At approximately 9 a.m., the University Police Department will be holding an “active shooter and rapid response” exercise. UPD is asking those who will be on campus that day to sign up to receive the Emergency Notification System test alert that day. Log onto www.csuchico.edu/alerts.

Another fee hike
The California State University Board of Trustees voted last week to raise student fees system-wide by $276 per undergrad, $324 for teacher credential students and $342 for graduate students. The hope is that the increase will help ease the pain of a significant state budget cut. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger amended his original plan this month, setting aside an extra $97.6 million for the CSU system.

Summer reading
A recent study of the most popular books on college campuses might be just the thing to spark a renewed interest in that old pastime called reading. Here are the top 10.

Armageddon in Retrospect, by Kurt Vonnegut (see review). 4. The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow. 5. Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri. 6.
