The force is with us

The members of Chico’s Full Force Hip-Hop and Jazz Company are keeping busy themselves—and racking up some awards while they’re at it.

In addition to their annual dance event in May, which sold out all three nights, the troupe just returned from two NorCal competitions—Urban Jamm in San Jose and L.A. Elite in Santa Clara—and received three platinum awards as well as the Creativity Award for a hip-hop version of The Nutcracker.

Full Force was started in 2001 by Geneveve M-Peña, who now serves as the assistant director. The company now includes 15 choreographers and 50 dancers in five divisions: Wee Force (4 to 6 years old), Mini Force (7 to 11), Lil’ Force (11 to 13), Full Force (11 and older) and Nor Cal Groove (18 and older).

Jarrah Myles, who took over as artistic director two years ago, said Full Force keeps up on the latest street dance styles like krumping and brings back some of the classic moves of breakdancing. The company has produced budding stars, including Ashley Everett, who’s currently on tour with Beyoncé.

Classes for ages 2 and older begin June 25. Full Force will also offer a Dance Intensive program in which 20 classes will be offered for $100. Auditions for all divisions will be held Aug. 25 and 26 at Chico Creek Dance Centre. For more info, visit www.chicoballet.org/dance_centre or call 893-9028.
