The Complete Thin Man Collection
The Thin Man, based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett, was one of the biggest hits of 1934 and spawned a successful series of films and radio dramas that provided audiences an escape from the Great Depression and the war years. Starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, a witty and hard-drinking detective couple, the original is one the finest comedies Hollywood has ever produced. The Thin Man is so smartly written and impeccably acted, it doesn’t seem dated at all. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the sequels, which overdo the cute dog schtick, introduce a cute kid and replace much of the original’s repartee with mugging. Still, the series is head and shoulders above its contemporaries. The Thin Man Collection also features early appearances from Donna Reed, Jimmy Stewart and Dean Stockwell. The third film in the series, Another Thin Man, even features interiors filmed in Bidwell Mansion. The set is rounded out with documentaries on the actors, trailers, short features, vintage cartoons, radio dramas and even a TV pilot. For fans of Hollywood’s Golden Age, this is a must-have.
