Supporting student veterans
Honoring vets and their allies on Veterans Day
The news that Chico State University has been recognized for its “military friendliness” by three military-focused publications is welcome, though it should be noted that “military” is used broadly in this case. The “friendliness” the university shows is toward veterans, whom the university clearly seeks to serve well.
The publications cited the comprehensive array of services offered veterans: the existence of a Student Veterans Organization, Veteran Education Support Team and the Student Veterans Center in addition to the Office of Veterans Affairs; the ability of veterans to earn academic credit for their military experience; special treatment during admissions and registration; and much more.
On this Veterans Day, as we honor those who have served in the military, let’s also join in recognizing Chico State University and, we should add, Butte College, which has similarly excellent programs for veterans, for going the extra mile to support them when they return to civilian life.
