Students scour the river
Chico State holds cleanup on the Sacramento River
Dozens of Chico State students affiliated with two Associated Students programs volunteered their time on Saturday (Sept. 11) scouring the Sacramento River for trash and other debris dumped there after the Labor Day weekend festivities.
About 45 students from Community Action Volunteers in Education and Adventure Outings took to the mighty Sacramento in rafts and kayaks and spent six hours collecting refuse and recyclables from the banks of the river, and especially the “Beer Can Beach” region.
The trip was a welcome change from river activity during the previous weekend. On Sunday (Sept. 5), an estimated 15,000 college-aged people floated down the river, littering the waterway during the journey.
