Star Trek Online
Cryptic Studios | Online role-playing game
Space is vast and full of possibilities. Unfortunately, like the universe, this massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) isn’t exactly teeming with life. One million players signed up to rise through the ranks of Starfleet and the Klingon Empire, but the potential for an engaging experience sometimes outweighs the reality. Initially, an in-depth customization of your character gives hope for the adventure ahead. However, once you’re running around putting the smackdown on the Borg, you realize the limitations placed upon your creation. The keyboard controls are sluggish and awkward, particularly when piloting ships that lack maneuverability. Quests and storylines feel a little shallow and rough; lacking the sense of endless possibilities found in other MMORPGs, such as the reigning champion World of Warcraft, but the foundation is there. If the players, who really add to the game with their humor and passion, get behind it then Cryptic is in the position to nurture an MMORPG capable of competing with the king. Right now, it’s like sitting through Generations when you know First Contact is waiting right around the corner; it’s no Star Trek V, but it could be something so much greater.
