Soul City
Follow Cadillac Jackson on his journey into and around Soul City. From the beginning of this tasty novel, Touré sets the needle into the grooves of rich black culture. From the mayoral campaign—he who DJs the best party wins—to the attempted brainwashing of Soul City’s citizens by mysterious ingredients in Jigaboo Shampoo, Tourés characters ride through the streets, not in mere cars but in the likes of Ella-, Billie- or Jimimobiles. They have no need for a hospital; instead the sick and injured head to the house of Big Mama. This tale, with appearances by the Devil, God, Death and Humbert Humbert, is thick with literary references and imaginative narrative. Be prepared to be challenged, possibly shocked and definitely delighted.
