An investigation is under way into an oil-rig leak that has dumped thousands of barrels of fuel into the Timor Sea in Australia since late August.

Australian officials will focus on the cause of the leak, response procedures and the spill’s environmental impact, which is said to be one of the country’s most devastating environmental catastrophes.

An estimated 400 barrels of oil have spilled into the sea each day during the past two months, stretching the slick across thousands of miles of remote ocean, according to The Associated Press.

On Nov. 1, a fire broke out on the West Atlas rig and Montara wellhead platform as workers were pouring mud into the rig’s leaking hole. Officials were not able to plug the leak and extinguish the fire until two days later. An investigative report on the incident is due in April.
