Science education fails

Study shows California schools put little emphasis on the subject

California elementary schools are putting so much emphasis on math and English that other subjects are falling behind, according to a recent report by the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning. The report, titled High Hopes—Few Opportunities: The Status of Elementary Science Education in California, found that despite the fact that nine out of 10 principals believe science is extremely important, less than half think their students will receive high-quality science education. Below are the responses teachers gave when asked what factors were either major or moderate challenges to teaching science:

Limited time for science 92%

Emphasis on ELA and math 81%

Limited funds for supplies 70%

Limited training 66%

Lack of facilities 56%

Lack of district support 47%

Limited student interest 8%
