Primary numbers
Republicans outnumbered going in to Tuesday’s primary
According to numbers released by the California Secretary of State’s Office on Monday (June 2), Democrats outnumbered Republicans registered for Tuesday’s primary by more than 2.5 million (7,692,670, or 43 percent, compared with 5,036,610, or 28 percent). There were 153 legislative and congressional seats up for grabs, and 50 certified write-in candidates statewide. Voter turnout for nonpresidential primaries is traditionally low: Not including this week’s vote, the highest turnout was in 1978 (69 percent) and the lowest in 2008 (28 percent).
